Historical Mats and Dams on the Mississippi

The images below depict the use of brush and small timber layered and woven to create floating mats and dams.  These images were in the U of I photo archive but did not include an explanation; a key word was waddling which is a term used to describe a historical form of building called waddle and dob which refers to the use of mud and sticks to construct a building.  It is easy to imagine a floating carpet of greenery using an updated version of the method below.  Notice the people standing on the outer edge of the mat.
